Biography

B.Sc. Zoology (University of British Columbia), 1975
M.Sc. Soil Science(University of Alberta), 1984
Ph.D. Soil Science (University Alberta), 1989

DR. Maule's expertise is in soil hydrology and conservation of bioresources. His research topics have included infiltration and snowmelt runoff of agricultural and forested lands, water conservation in dryland farming, transport of water and agricultural chemicals through to soil zone to the groundwater, agro-meteorology, and the effect of animal manures on soil and water quality. His research is carried out in collaboration with academics and scientists from Soil Science, Geography, Agriculture and Agric-food Canada, the National Water Quality Institute, and Japanese Agricultural Research Institutes (Hokkaido). Results of this research have led to improved understanding of the effects of tillage on soil water balance and soil heat transport and design of earthen manure storage structures. His current research involves the use of environmental tracers to enable better measurement of recharge and transport processes through the unsaturated zone of semi-arid soils.

Dr. Maule's teaching includes subject areas of environmental physics (energy and mass transport and storage), soil-water-plant relations, soil and water conservation, and that of soil hydrology of semi-arid environments.

His professional associations include SIA, CBE, and ASBE.
