Sample Answers for Short Assignments
The samples aren't intended to display THE answers to the questions on the assignments; instead, they’re just some of my suggestions for how you might have tackled these questions (or, more accurately, how I might have answered them). Don’t despair if you didn’t say exactly the same things I said; this isn’t an exercise in guessing the answer I would have given, since there's usually more than one way to read the text, and to defend that reading. The short assignments are an exercise in reading sensitively and being able to explain why you are reading the artifact the way you are. And it’s about amplifying your answers sufficiently, and not taking your assumptions for granted. Remember: rhetorical criticism is a "special kind of reason-giving discourse" that is intended to help us understand how a particular artifact, and how rhetoric in general, operates.
